About me / Artist statement:
I am an expressionistic painter and art teacher born and living in Phoenix, Arizona. I began my artistic career at Arizona State University and fell in love with the paintbrush two years into my studies. I am currently teaching art in the Alhambra Elementary School District.
My subject matter focuses on emotions or memories of mine. I believe art is a way for an artist to discover themselves and re-discover their ideas or beliefs and why they have them. To paint with emotion lets the work unfold naturally and undisturbed. It can be even therapeutic for restless emotions or internal struggles. I am particularly influenced by the works of artists such as Edvard Munch, Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, among others and encourage the viewer to think about art as both an idea and an emotion.
For this reason, as an art teacher I believe that art is vital to a child’s education as it provides a creative outlet for them to express what they are thinking or feeling or to question their own beliefs and why they have them. My goal as a teacher is to teach children the value of expressing themselves with art and learning the creative skills that will follow them through their entire lives in any occupation or lifestyle.
